Origin and history

Château de la Motte-Babin is a building located in Louverné, in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. This modern house, flanked by two towers, is preceded by a long avenue of lime trees and surrounded by a large moat. A charmille leads to a chapel of Romanesque style, built by Mr. Boret father. At the end of the 19th century, the estate belonged to Jean-Baptiste Le Segretain, who welcomed the Jesuit Scholastics of Laval in 1880.

The Motte-Babin was once part of the Troussière estate, and a rent of 8 bushels of red wheat was attached to it. The castle was also surrounded by marble quarries, one of which depended on the farm of the estate. Abbé Angot, in his Dictionnaire historique de la Mayenne (1900-1910), describes this place as an architectural ensemble marked by its aisle of lime trees and its role as temporary asylum for the Jesuits.

The history of the castle is linked to local figures such as Renée d'Anthenaise, who attached seigneurial obligations to it, and Jean-Baptiste Le Segretain, owner at the end of the 19th century. Although little detail was available on its initial construction, its condition at that time reflected a residential and religious architecture typical of the rural areas of western France.
