Origin and history

The castle of Sanzay, located near the eponymous village of Argenton-les-Vallées (Deux-Sèvres), is a 13th century building located in a marshy area. Its defensive architecture combines a double enclosure with external and internal moat, an entrance chestnut flanked by towers, and a truncated dungeon. The vestiges in elevation also include a Gothic chapel decorated with the coats of arms of the Sanzay family in the 16th century, as well as an artillery tower and a home of the guards. Archaeological excavations revealed five missing enclosure towers, while restorations (1998-2003) stabilized the structures.

The history of the castle is closely linked to the family of Sanzay, although few direct documents attest to its construction or initial use. The assumptions on its evolution are therefore based on archaeological studies, in particular those conducted by Gilles Niort and the local association. The site, profoundly redesigned in the 19th century, was listed as a historical monument in 1930 for its medieval elements (gate of the castle, chapel, remains of fortifications). Since 2007, it has hosted the association La Colporteuse, contributing to its development.

The dungeon, accessible by two independent levels, houses a paved chapel with walls decorated with 16th century coats of arms. The Gothic bay and the panel carved in tufa, though degraded, testify to its religious use. The moats, partially covered, were searched and watered again, revealing defensive developments as a reported slope, probably a boulevard against fire attacks. The east buildings, rebuilt on 15th century substructures, illustrate the successive transformations of the site.

Ranked for its medieval elements (chapel, gate and fortifications), the castle of Sanzay embodies the poitevin castral architecture, between defensive heritage and residential adaptations. Recent work has helped to preserve threatened structures, such as the dungeon roof (2005) or the châtelet openings (bridge-levis, poterne). Archaeological publications, notably in the bulletins of the Association for the Development of Archaeology on Niort, document these discoveries.
