The tower: inscription by order of 30 October 1925

Origin and history

The Château d'Abain, located in the commune of Thurageau (Vienna, Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is a historical monument whose oldest elements date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. The sources mention towers built during this period, while the house body was built in the seventeenth century. Today, only one tower remains, accompanied by agricultural parts, the rest having been destroyed at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The tower still standing was inscribed as a Historical Monument by order of 30 October 1925. This castle, a private property, is only accessible to the public on the occasion of the European Heritage Days (JEP), subject to the arrangements laid down by the Tourist Office of the Haut-Poitou. The information available does not specify sponsors or significant events related to its history.

The site is located with an accuracy deemed "very satisfactory" (note 8/10), and its exact address is 6 Rue de la Tour, 86110 Thurageau. The data come mainly from the Merimée database and the Monumentum platform, with a last update in August 2022. No additional information is available on its original use or historical occupants.
