Origin and history

Bellevue Castle is a 19th-century building located in the municipality of Le Clerjus, south of the Vosges department, in the Grand Est region (former Lorraine). Built in the second half of the 1800s, it illustrates the private architecture of forges masters, major players in the local steel industry. His name appears on IGN maps, but he does not enjoy any protection for historical monuments.

The castle has a simple rectangular shape, with a four-paned roof. It is distinguished by its proximity to the Castle Puton, another forge master residence built a century earlier, 600 meters southeast. These two buildings bear witness to the economic influence of industrial families in the southern Vosges.

Bellevue Castle was erected by a member of the family of Buyer, dynasty of forges masters active in the area. Although without heritage classification, it remains a marker of Vosges industrial history, linked to the exploitation of mining and forestry resources between the 18th and 19th centuries.
