Origin and history

The Château de Belvès, also known as Hotel de Commarque, is an emblematic 16th-century building located in the commune of Belvès, Dordogne. This monument is distinguished by its architectural elements typical of the Renaissance, such as broken arches, ground and carved sled windows, and a round tower. A notable feature is the presence of latrines or external breches, rare elements for this period. A restoration at the end of the 19th century added a door, slightly changing its original appearance.

In 2011, murals dating from the second half of the 15th century were discovered in the castle, revealing an unsuspecting artistic heritage. These frescoes, studied in works like Murals in Périgord (2021), testify to the cultural importance of the site well before its current construction. The castle has been protected as a Historic Monument since 6 December 1948, a recognition of its heritage value.

The building is located in the heart of Belvès, at the address Grande-Rue; Place Saint-Dominique, in an area marked by a medieval and reborn rich history. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments specifically covers cadastral plots A 243 and 242. Although sources mention potential uses such as visiting or renting, no specific information is available on its current accessibility or contemporary functions.
