Origin and history
The castle of Blandans finds its origins in the fence of Brandans, fief mentioned in 1233 as property of the Count of Chalon. This winery, structured around a medieval tower with a cellar and a vaulted lower hall, reflects from the fourteenth century the economic importance of the vineyard in the region. Four turrets then completed this defensive and utilitarian ensemble, testifying to a seigneurial occupation linked to the exploitation of the land.
The major transformation took place in the second half of the 16th century, when the castle adopted its current U-shaped plan. The builders integrate the medieval vestiges — pantry and lower room — while adding a screwed stair tower and two circular towers to the corners of the main body. These developments, characteristic of the Renaissance, mark a desire for modernization while preserving the original winemaking functions. The 17th century completed this architectural evolution, without fundamentally altering the structure.
In the 19th century, the northern wing of the communes was enlarged to meet new residential or agricultural needs. Although redesigned in the 19th and 20th centuries, the castle has retained protected elements since 2007, such as the main body with its towers, facades and roofs of the south and north wings. These protections highlight the heritage value of a building that combines medieval heritage, renaissant adaptations and traces of modern redevelopments.
The wine economy, the initial engine of construction, explains the sustainability of the site. The medieval tower, with its vaulted cellar, recalls the central role of wine in the seigneurial organization, while the subsequent transformations illustrate the evolution of agricultural and residential practices in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Today, the Blandans castle thus embodies almost eight centuries of local history, from the fiefs totals to its inscription as the Historical Monuments.
