Origin and history
The Château de Bougie is a castle located in the village of Bougie, in Haute-Saône, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Built between the end of the 16th century and the end of the 17th century, it is distinguished by its watch tower surmounted by a bell on breche, rare vestige of its medieval defensive system. Originally flanked by four towers, it now retains only one, dated 1585, while its classic facades feature baluster windows. The exterior walls have pustula bosses, ornaments whose function remains enigmatic.
The history of the castle is marked by a reuse as a farm in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1944, he was sheltering an indistinctly resistant medical hospital and German soldiers, which would have spared his total destruction. Partially classified as historic monuments in 1979, its protection was extended to the entire building, including its basement, in August 2020. An exhibition was organized there in 2020 on the topic of Franche-Comté in 1814.
Architecturally, the castle illustrates the transition between medieval defensive systems and stylistic influences of neighbouring regions, including Lorraine and Champagne. The round tower, the last vestige of the original fortified enclosure, contrasts with the later classic additions. Its strategic location, between Justey and Combeaufontaine, highlights its historic role in monitoring local axes.
Today, the Château de Bougie remains a testimony of the successive adaptations of a military building to a place of life and memory. Its recent inscription as a historic monument in total (2020) reflects the desire to preserve this hybrid heritage, both defensive and residential, characteristic of the Haute-Saône.
