Origin and history
The château de Chandioux, also known as château de Champdioux, is a historical monument located in the commune of Maux, in the department of Nièvre, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Dating mainly from the 14th and 15th centuries, it presents itself today in the form of ruins, witnesses of medieval architecture. This castle is a typical example of fortifications built during this period, marked by local conflicts and increased defence needs.
The castle was listed as a historical monument by decree on 9 January 1970, thus recognizing its heritage value. Since 1964, it belongs to the Allaire family, which has acquired 110 hectares of surrounding land. Patrick Allaire, current owner, and his wife Josette, inherited this estate, originally purchased by Patrick's father, a Charolaise breeder from Brittany. The castle, though ruined, remains a central part of this vast agricultural estate.
The precise location of the castle is indicated as being at 9 Pré de l'Étang, in Maux, with geographical accuracy deemed satisfactory. The ruins, identified under cadastre B 805, are protected as elements of the French architectural heritage. Despite its state, the site retains historical and cultural interest, illustrating the medieval past of the region and subsequent agricultural transformations.
