Origin and history

The Château de Charleville-sous-Bois, located in the Moselle department, is a building built in 1775 by the master builder Dom Sébastien Chais. It incorporates a 1620s stretch house, thus demonstrating an earlier occupation of the site. This monument, emblematic of 18th century architecture, reflects the stylistic and social evolutions of its time.

The castle was listed as historic monuments on 29 June 1993, recognizing its heritage value. The protected elements include not only the castle itself, but also its outbuildings and gardens, emphasizing the importance of the architectural and landscaped ensemble. This site is today a testimony of local and regional history.

The Greater East region, especially Moselle, was at that time marked by a rural and artisanal economy. Castles, such as Charleville-sub-Bois, often served as residences for local elites, while playing a role in the social and economic organization of the surrounding territories. Their construction reflected the ambitions and status of their owners, while integrating architectural elements inherited from previous centuries.
