Origin and history
The Château de Clairvaux-les-Lacs is a historical monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Jura (39), in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its origins date back to the 15th and 17th centuries, periods marked by significant architectural changes. The site is characterized by a tower, the only protected element, inscribed by ministerial decree in 1932.
Today, the castle belongs to the commune and its current use (visits, rental, accommodation) remains partially documented. The location of the castle, noted as "passable" (level 5/10) in the heritage databases, corresponds to the address 16 Grande Rue in Clairvaux-les-Lacs. This type of monument, typical of small local lords or secondary fortifications, often played a role of territorial control or aristocratic residence in the medieval and modern Jura.
The region, then marked by a rural economy and limited exchanges, saw these castles as administrative or defensive hubs for the surrounding communities. Their preservation, like that of the Clairvaux Tower, reflects the importance attached to this local heritage by 20th century cultural policies.
