Origin and history

Combettes Castle is a building located in the town of Ribennes, in Lozère, in the Occitanie region. Although its construction period is not specified in the available sources, it represents a significant architectural heritage of this rural area of southern France. Its designation as historic monuments in 1998 reflects its cultural importance and the desire to preserve its heritage for future generations.

The castle and its surroundings were also recognized for their landscape value, obtaining the classification in natural site in 1990. This dual protection, both monumental and environmental, highlights the historical and ecological interest of the estate. Ribennes, like many of Lozérian municipalities, is marked by a built heritage often linked to the medieval or modern history of Gevaudan, a region known for its castles and its deep rural heritage.

Monuments such as the Castle of Combettes traditionally play a central role in the social and economic organization of rural areas. In Occitanie, especially in Lozère, these buildings have often served as seigneurial residences, defence sites or local administrative centres. Their presence reflects a social hierarchy anchored in the feudal system, then post-feudal, where the nobility and local elites exerted their influence on the surrounding populations. These castles were also symbols of power and stability in areas sometimes isolated or subject to conflict.
