The dovecote in strips of wood and torches (C 73): inscription by decree of 20 July 1966

Origin and history

The Château d'En-Haut, located in Belloy-sur-Somme in the Hauts-de-France, is a monument dated from the 4th quarter of the 18th century. This castle is partially inscribed in the Historical Monuments, especially for its pigeon-house in wooden strips and torchis, protected by ministerial decree in 1966. This type of dovecote, typical of the rural buildings of the time, served both as a symbol of prestige for landowners and as a food reserve for local populations.

The location of the castle, although documented in the Mérimée base with a specific address (15 Rue Henri Boistel de Belloy), is considered to have an average accuracy (level 6 of 10). This monument illustrates the rural and seigneurial architecture of the late eighteenth century in Picardie, a region marked by an agricultural economy and hierarchical social structures. Pigeons, often associated with noble or bourgeois domains, played an important economic and social role in rural communities.

The information available on the Castle of En-Haut comes mainly from the Monumentum database and from the internal data of the Merimée database. No information is provided on the opening to the public, the services offered (visits, rentals, accommodations) or other architectural elements protected outside the dovecote. The commune of Belloy-sur-Somme, identified by code Insee 80082, belongs to the department of the Somme and to the region of Hauts-de-France, formerly Picardie.
