Origin and history

Fourquevaux Castle finds its origins in the 15th century, in the eponymous commune of Fourquevaux, located in the Haute-Garonne department. The building, originally conceived as a castle, underwent major transformations in the 16th century, reflecting the architectural changes and residential needs of the era. At that time he belonged to the Beccaria family of Pavia, a member of which distinguished himself as ambassador of Catherine de Medici, thus stressing its importance in the diplomatic and aristocratic circles of the French Renaissance.

In the last quarter of the 18th century, an orangery was added to the estate, marking a new beautification phase of the castle. This building, decorated with frontons, ionic pilasters and a balustrade surmounted by pots, illustrates the taste for the classic and decorative elements of the era. Inside, elements of Empire style decoration show subsequent changes, although their exact date is not specified in the sources. The ensemble, including the facades and roofs of the castle as well as those of the orangery, was protected as historical monuments by a decree of 11 July 1979, thus recognizing its heritage value.

Fourquevaux Castle today preserves an ancient central wing, characterized by an arcade ground floor overlooking an inner courtyard and an upper floor. Although the monument is a private property, its inscription and classification by the Ministry of Culture make it a notable architectural testimony of the medieval, reborn and classical periods in Occitanie. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its address to Fourquevaux (code Insee 31192) and its historical affiliation to the Midi-Pyrénées region, now integrated into Occitanie.
