The château du Haut Maulay in its entirety as well as the soil that may contain archaeological remains, shown in the cadastre section A, parcels 153 to 157, 160, 161 and 826: inscription by order of 25 October 2018.
Origin and history
The Château du Haut Maulay is a historic monument located in the commune of Maulay, New Aquitaine. This castle, whose location is estimated as satisfactory a priori, has been included in the inventory of Historic Monuments since 25 October 2018. The protection order covers all of the castle as well as the surrounding soil, which may contain archaeological remains. These plots, referred to in the cadastre under numbers 153 to 157, 160, 161 and 826, underline the heritage importance of the site, both for its building and for its archaeological potential.
Maulay, attached to the Department of Vienna (code Insee 86151) and to the former Poitou-Charentes region, is now part of the large New Aquitaine region. The castle, located at the Domaine du Haut Maulay (mail address: 34 Le Haut Maulay), illustrates the local architectural heritage. Although the available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not specify its current use, its recent inscription demonstrates a desire to preserve. However, the data are lacking to detail its history, its successive owners or its past functions, limiting its understanding of its role in regional history.
The castles of this region, often linked to aristocracy or seigneurial management, served as administrative, military or agricultural centres. In Poitou-Charentes, as elsewhere, these buildings reflected the social and economic dynamics of their time, between local power and land exploitation. Without a precise archive on the Upper Maulay, it is difficult to assign a specific function to this monument, but its inscription suggests a recognized heritage value.
