Origin and history

Hostel Castle is a historic building located in Belmont-Luthézieu, Valromey, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It consists of a tower, buildings and walls, and once housed a windmill today in ruins. This castle, whose architecture reflects successive changes, is a typical example of the defensive and residential constructions of the region.

Hostel Castle dates back to the 16th century, a period marked by architectural and social transformations in France. At the beginning of the twentieth century, it became a place of residence for cultural personalities, such as the writer Paul Claudel. He lived there several times after his marriage in 1906 with the daughter of the then owner, Louis Sainte-Marie-Perrin. This family bond illustrates the importance of social and cultural alliances associated with this type of field.

The successive renovations of the castle testify to its adaptation to the needs and tastes of the eras crossed. Although not all the details of these changes are documented, they reflect the evolution of lifestyles and construction techniques between the 16th and 20th centuries. The windmill, now in ruins, recalls the economic and agricultural activities that were formerly associated with this type of property.
