Origin and history

Lardeyrol Castle, built around 1021-1028, was a medieval fortress located in Saint-Pierre-Eynac, Haute-Loire. He held a strategic position on the Puy Road (now RN88), allowing him to control the Montferrat and Glavenas tolls. This route, crucial during the feudal period, linked Lyon to Puy-en-Velay, reinforcing the economic and political importance of the baronie de Lardeyrol in the Velay.

The first historical mention concerns Guido, lord of Lardeyrol, and his wife Barnelde, who donated a lie to the convent of Chamalières in the 11th century. In 1213 Pons de Chapteuil paid tribute to the bishop of Puy for this castle, confirming his feudal status. The archives were missing for the next two centuries, but a revolutionary act attested to its demolition before that period.

The ruins of the castle, exploited as a quarry at the beginning of the twentieth century, were definitively destroyed. Today, the site remains a private property not accessible to the public. Its history illustrates the decline of feudal fortresses after the end of the Middle Ages, while highlighting their past role in controlling commercial and religious axes.

The barony of Lardeyrol, one of the most powerful in the Velay, drew its influence from its position on this major road. Local lords, like Guido, embody feudal aristocracy linked to ecclesiastical powers, represented here by the bishop of Puy, also Count of Velay. This link between nobility and Church then structured society and the regional economy.
