Origin and history
Matecoulon Castle, located in Montpeyroux, Dordogne, is a building built between the 16th, 18th and 19th centuries. It is distinguished by its U-shaped plane, flanked by four round round corners. The house body and wings have a variety of bays (segular arches and full hanger) surmounted by doculi, while the interior distribution retains the 18th century layout. 19th-century layouts and decorations were added, reflecting successive stylistic developments.
The estate organizes around terraces, courtyards, commons and gardens, integrated since the eighteenth century in a harmonious landscape composition. The park, mentioned as early as the 18th century on plans, was modified several times in the 19th century. It houses factories with mysterious symbolism, as well as an ancient stoneware and a large titheer located in the northeast. These elements make it an exceptional architectural and landscape example in the Dordogne, combining classical heritage and subsequent transformations.
The castle and its outbuildings have been the subject of successive protections: classification of facades and roofs in 1972, registration of the park and factories in 2003, then interiors and surroundings in 2008. These measures highlight the heritage value of the site, both for its architecture, landscape park and industrial remains (feathering). The monument remains accessible during summer visits, offering a testimony of the architectural and social evolutions of the region.
