Origin and history
Sardan Castle, located in the Gard department in the Occitanie region (formerly Languedoc-Roussillon), is an 18th-century building, profoundly redesigned and enlarged during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. Today it is a private property, partially open to the public at Heritage Days. Its classification as historical monuments, which took place on 12 December 1996, specifically concerns a ground floor room decorated with an exceptional panoramic wallpaper.
This wallpaper, entitled "The French in Italy", was made in 1829 by the Dufour manufacture. It illustrates in 30 lees (partly missing) the Napoleonic countryside in Italy, with emblematic scenes such as the passage of the Alps, the Battle of Arcole, or the entrance to Rome. Treated in grey with blue for the skies, this military panorama, rare for the time, bears witness to remarkable artistic and historical know-how. Its almost complete preservation makes it a unique example in France.
The architecture of the castle, although little documented, reflects the typical transformations of the aristocratic residences of the 19th century, mixing heritage of the century of the Lights and romantic additions. The site, located at 5026 Route de Sommières, enjoys heritage protection limited to its classified interior decoration, highlighting the cultural importance of this visual testimony of the Napoleonic epic.
