Medieval castle of Schell-Vinsberg: infrastructures (cad. 60 3): registration by decree of 24 December 1991
Origin and history
Schell-Vinsberg Castle, located in the municipality of Volstroff in the Moselle department, is a medieval monument whose history remains today very fragmentary. By the middle of the 19th century, no architectural trace was left, and the only remains still observable today are the ditches that once delineated its enclosure. These elements led to its registration as a Historical Monument by order of 24 December 1991, thus protecting the remaining infrastructures.
Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum base, indicate that the castle was located at the approximate address of 29 Vinsberg, in an area whose geographical accuracy is considered "a priori satisfactory". There is no information to date precisely its construction, climax or destruction, nor to identify its owners or its exact role in local history. The ditches, the only material witnesses, nevertheless recall the strategic importance of castles in Lorraine, a region marked by border conflicts and a complex feudal organization.
The absence of significant remains and detailed documentation limits the understanding of this site. Unlike other castles in the region, Schell-Vinsberg did not leave any written or architectural traces to reconstruct its appearance, its functions (defensive, residential, symbolic) or its integration into the Mosellan seigneurial landscape. Its inscription in the title of the Historical Monuments nevertheless underlines the desire to preserve the memory of these works, even when their materiality has almost completely disappeared.
