Origin and history

Cachard Castle, located in the commune of Boffers in Ardèche, is a fortified house built between the 15th and 16th centuries. This monument is distinguished by its round towers surmounted by flat roofs, characteristic of the defensive architecture of the era. He was the historic residence of the Bouvier de Cachard family, some of whom, such as Jean Humbert Bouvier, Count of Cachard, held notable military positions, notably in Valencia.

Between 1786 and 1792, the young Corsican lieutenant Napoleone di Buonaparte, the future Napoleon Bonaparte, would have stayed several times in this castle. These visits were linked to his friendship with Annet Christin Bouvier or Jean Humbert Bouvier, then artillery lieutenant. This historical detail adds a particular dimension to this monument, although documentary evidence remains limited.

The interiors of the castle house remarkable frescoes, especially in the library, made by painter Henri de Saint-Jean. These artistic works bear witness to the cultural refinement of the owners of the premises. Today, the castle is still privately owned and is home to an animal park where species such as deer, wild boar and sheep evolve in semi-freedom, offering an ecological and tourist dimension to the site.
