Origin and history

Combray Castle is located in the commune of Fauguernon, Calvados department, Normandy. Although its origin dates back to the 16th century, the current building was rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The site preserves notable historical features, such as the dovecote, the entrance gate and a turret, located near the castle farm, about 500 meters northeast.

These remains, including the gate and its turret and the dovecote facades, were inscribed in the Historic Monuments by order of 4 October 1972. This protection highlights the heritage importance of these structures, which bear witness to the architecture and seigneurial organization of the region. The road to Rocques, where the castle is located, highlights its anchoring in the local landscape.

The Normandy region, especially Calvados, has many similar monuments, reflecting a rich history marked by medieval and modern times. Castles and their dependencies, such as dovecotes, played a central role in the agricultural economy and the social life of rural communities. These buildings often illustrated the power of local lords and served as points of assembly or management of surrounding lands.
