Origin and history
Esnon Castle is an iconic building from the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, located in the town of Esnon, in the department of Yonne. This castle, whose facades and roofs (excluding the wings of the nineteenth century), the dovecote and orangery have been listed as historical monuments since 1980, illustrates the aristocratic residential architecture of this period in Burgundy. Its official registration, by order of 22 February 1980, underlines its heritage importance, although details of its origins or historical owners remain little documented in available sources.
The location of the castle, at address 107 Le Château à Esnon, is attested by the Merimée and Monumentum bases, which place it in a rural setting characteristic of the Yonne. At that time, the region was marked by an agricultural economy and hierarchical social structures, and the castles played a central role as seigneurial residences or land management sites. These buildings also served as symbols of power and prestige for their owners, often from the nobility or rising bourgeoisie.
The protected features of Esnon Castle, such as pigeon-house and orangery, reflect typical 18th-century rural estates. The dovecote, in particular, was a sign of seigneurial privilege, while orangery showed a taste for French-style gardens and exotic cultures, popular among the elite. The absence of specific references to sponsors or architects in the sources, however, limits the knowledge of its specific history, outside its architectural and regulatory framework.
Current practical information, such as the opening to the visit or the services offered (room rental, guest rooms), are not detailed in the sources consulted. The castle nevertheless remains a witness to the architectural and social heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté, classified among the historical monuments of the Yonne and referenced in the national heritage bases.
