Origin and history

Launay-Baffert Castle, located in the department of Maine-et-Loire, on the communes of Chavaignes and Noyant-Villages, is an emblematic building of the 1st quarter of the 19th century. Reborn in a style inspired by Italian architecture, it is part of a vast landscape park designed around 1823 by architect Lalos. This area illustrates the influence of Italian models in Anjou at the beginning of the 19th century, with an alley of mulberry trees dedicated to the breeding of silkworm, economic activity then flourishing in the region.

The castle and its outbuildings ( stables, orangery, stables) were renovated or built between 1825 and 1837, reflecting a period of modernization of aristocratic residences. The whole, including the park, the magnanerie and the facades of the communes, was inscribed in the historical monuments by order of 19 May 1995. This classification underlines the heritage value of the site, both for its architecture and for its landscape designed, characteristic of the great rural estates of the 19th century in Pays de la Loire.

The location of the castle, at the border of the communes of Chavaignes and Noyant-Villages, reflects the territorial recompositions and social dynamics of the period. The park, with its geographical precision considered "passable" (level 5/10), and the related buildings such as orangery, reveal a spatial organization designed to combine agricultural production (seric farming), social representation and aristocratic living environment. Available sources (Monumentum, Mérimée, Wikipedia) confirm its role in the Angeline heritage.
