Origin and history

The castle of Persanges, located in L'Étoile in the Jura, is a building built during the first half of the 19th century. It is part of the hillside landscape, accessible by a side avenue and an axial portal. Its architecture includes a central house body flanked by two wings of commons in return: one dedicated to viticulture, the other forming a courtyard of commons. This type of arrangement reflects the typical organisation of the rural Burgundy estates of the time, combining agricultural and residential functions.

The house body retains decorative elements characteristic of the Restoration period, such as marquetry parquet floors, an adorned alcove, and carved reliefs on the mists of the chimneys. These interior details bear witness to the architectural and artisanal refinement of the aristocracy or the Earth bourgeoisie in the early 19th century, a period marked by a return to classical styles after revolutionary upheavals.

The castle, including its ancillary buildings and a cooler, was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 19 July 2006. This protection concerns all the structures and their decorations, highlighting their heritage value. The official address recorded in the Mérimée base places the monument at L'Étoile (Insee code 39217), although some approximate GPS coordinates place it near Saint-Didier, reflecting localization inaccuracies.

The configuration of the estate, with its commons and cooler, suggests an organized farm, probably centered on viticulture, a major economic activity in Burgundy-Franche-Comté since the Middle Ages. The west and south gates, also protected, mark the symbolic and functional accesses of the castle, reinforcing its residential and productive character.

The location of the castle, noted as "passible" (level 5/10) in the databases, indicates minor geographical uncertainties, frequent for rural monuments whose cadastral boundaries or denominations have changed. These inaccuracies, however, did not alter the recognition of its historical and architectural importance, attested by its ranking.

No information is available regarding the opening of the castle to the public, its current vocation (visits, room rental, accommodation), or possible owners or historical occupants. Sources are limited to architectural descriptions and heritage protection, without referring to its contemporary use or detailed social history.
