Origin and history

Presles Castle, located in the municipality of Presles-et-Thierny (département of Aisne, Hauts-de-France region), was founded in the 13th century by the bishops of Laon. This monument, now reduced to the state of ruins, bears witness to medieval defensive architecture and ecclesiastical influence in the region at that time. Only remains of its enclosure and chapel, inscribed in historical monuments since 1927.

The building fits into the context of the episcopal castles of the Middle Ages, often built to affirm the temporal power of bishops. These fortifications served as both a residence, a place of territorial control and a symbol of authority vis-à-vis the lay lords. The region of Laon, a major religious centre, had several similar constructions, reflecting tensions and alliances between spiritual and secular power.

The ruins of Presles Castle, though fragmentary, offer an overview of medieval construction techniques.
