Origin and history

The Château de Retour is a medieval monument whose ruins stand on the town of Lamastre, in Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Located on a mound overlooking a Doux loop in the Upper Vivarais, it offers a strategic view of the valley. This site, although partially in ruins, still bears witness to its historical and topographical importance in the region.

Built in the 10th century by the Pagan-Retour family, the castle would have suffered major damage in the 14th century, due to succession disputes within the same family. These internal conflicts, typical of feudal dynasties, probably precipitated its architectural decline. Despite its present state, the site retains a mysterious aura, reinforced by local legends transmitted throughout the centuries.

A popular legend, though unverified, tells that in the seventeenth century a lord still residing in the castle terrorized the inhabitants of Lamastre and the surrounding area. Five noble dragons, heroic figures of this account, had intervened to free the population from its yoke. This story, celebrated every summer at local festivals, combines reality and folklore, illustrating the attachment of the Lamasthree to their heritage. Today, the ruins of the Castle of Returntour remain a symbol of this troubled time, between history and myths.
