Origin and history
The lower castle of Aumelas is a building erected at the end of the sixteenth century, replacing an older mas. This monument, identified by the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage, is located in Aumelas, in the department of Hérault. It was built on an existing farm, located about one kilometer from the "high castle", the old feudal fortress of the village.
Originally, the seigneury of Aumelas was centered on a medieval fortress of the eleventh and fourteenth centuries, badly damaged during the Hundred Years War. In the 16th century, the seigneurial house, which had become uninhabitable, led a new buyer, Bonnet, to transfer the seigneurial residence to this new site. In 1595 he built the "low castle", which still remains today.
The castle presents a large work in limestone bellows, partially covered with lime coating, and is flanked by two almost engaged towers. A triple genoise adorns the roof of hollow tiles. Inside, a 14th century guard room recalls the existence of the anterior mas. The estate, surrounded by a carved box garden, also houses a winery and is regularly rented for events.
For several generations, the castle belongs to the family of Albenas. It is listed in the General Inventory of Cultural Heritage, highlighting its historical and architectural importance in the region.
