Origin and history

Cordeboeuf Castle is a castle built in the middle of the 15th century, located on the town of Paray-sous-Briailles, in the department of Allier, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It is distinguished by its massive architecture, with a rectangular house body flanked by four round towers, once protected by moat. The west and north facades retain great austerity, while the east side has kept mâchicoulis damaged by a cannonade.

The castle belonged successively to the Dubreuil and Reynaud families of Cordeboeuf. He played a military role, especially against the English. The connétable de Bourbon, on his way to Chantelle before fleeing to Italy, made a stop after crossing the ferry at Cors de Boeuf. A romantic pole, later added to the south façade, softens the initial defensive aspect of the building.

The windows, redesigned over the centuries, bear witness to the transformations suffered by the castle. Despite these modifications, it retains defensive elements characteristic of 15th century castles, such as mâchicoulis and corner towers. Its location, 1.5 km northeast of the village of Paray-sous-Briailles, reinforces its strategic character in the historical region of Bourbonnais.
