Origin and history

Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul-et-Saint-André de Saint-Claude Cathedral, located in the Jura department in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, finds its origins in Saint-Oyend Abbey founded in the 14th century. This Gothic monument, marked by a Baroque facade completed in the eighteenth century, succeeds a Romanesque abbey that disappeared. His history was rhythmic by major reconstructions: the first spans of the choir were completed around 1421 under the direction of Renaud de Beaujeu, master of the work, while the work of the nave lasted until the 15th century, interrupted by fires (notably in 1418 and 1547). The cathedral preserves 15th century stalls, carved by Jehan de Vitry, partially rebuilt after the 1983 fire.

The elevation of the abbey in the cathedral in 1742, when the abbey was secularized, accelerated its completion. The first bishop, Joseph Méallet de Fargues, oversees the finalisation of the facade, combining Gothic elements and a baroque "frontispice". The vaults of the first spans, which had not been completed since the 15th century, were finally built. In the 18th century, architect Nicolas Nicole rearranged the choir (deletion of the jube, displacement of the stalls) and added sacristies. The fires of 1799 destroyed structure and cover, requiring major restorations in the 19th century, including zinc cover and reconstruction of the cutting walls.

Ranked a historic monument in 1906, the cathedral houses organs of the factors Daublaine & Callinet (1844) and a reliquary of Saint Claude by the goldsmith Goudji. His status as a minor basilica, granted in 1952 by Pope Pius XII, is commemorated by a plaque at the entrance. The excavations of the choir revealed pre-Romanesque and Romanesque structures, testimonies of the churches dedicated to Saint Oyend (mythical founder) and the apostles Peter, Paul and Andrew from the 9th century. The building thus illustrates almost 16 centuries of religious and architectural history, from the monastery of Condat (Vth century) to its modern transformations.

The architecture of the cathedral is distinguished by a nave with three vessels of almost equal height, covered with pseudo-sexpartite vaults (central vessel) and quadripartites (collateral). The materials used reflect the epochs: light oolithic limestone for medieval high areas, and limestone from Portlandian (heavy) for exterior walls and 18th century additions. Lapidary signs, numerous on the walls, and bosses mark successive building campaigns. The hors-oeuvre bell tower, with a roof in the pavilion, and the " Jesuit" facade with a tripartite ordinance testify to this stylistic hybridization.

The archives reveal royal gifts, such as those of Louis XI (15th century), and tax pardons granted to finance reconstruction. In 1392, an annual discount by the antipope Clement VII was conditioned by the use of funds for the St. Peter's church. The factory accounts (1421–46) detail the expenses: warheads, vault keys, and choir pavement. The stalls, delivered in 1449, mark the completion of the liturgical choir. After three centuries of interruption, the nave was finally completed in the eighteenth century, thanks to the impulse of the newly created bishopric.

Subsequent transformations aim to adapt the building to its new functions. In the 19th century, the stalls were resettled face to face, a neo-Gothic altar was erected, and the pavement was renewed. The excavations also revealed a 9th century crypt dedicated to Saint Martin, built under the Romanesque church by Saint Hippolyte. This historical stratification — from the Merovingian monastery to the Baroque cathedral — makes it a key site for understanding the evolution of religious heritage in Franche-Comté, between clunisian heritage (links with La Chaise-Dieu) and local adaptations.
