Origin and history

St. Anne's Cathedral, originally under the dual patronage of Our Lady and St. Castor in the Middle Ages, is one of the oldest churches in the West dedicated to the cult of St. Anne, whose feast was celebrated there from the twelfth century. Its history dates back to antiquity, with a first Paleo-Christian cathedral destroyed in the third century, followed by successive reconstructions after the Franco and Sarrasin invasions. The relics of Saint Anne, according to the tradition of the East in the first century or by the Crusaders, have been venerated there since the twelfth century, making Apt a place of major pilgrimage.

In the 11th century, Bishop Alfant d'Agoult rebuilt the cathedral on its present location, incorporating a lower crypt dating from the Merovingian period. In the 12th century, a major reconstruction added a Gothic nave and a superior crypt, while Urbain V (1370) and Gregory XII (1584) formalized the cult of Saint Anne. The cathedral, classified as a minor basilica in 1867, underwent transformations in the 17th and 18th centuries, including the addition of the royal chapel Sainte-Anne (1643-1664), attributed to François de Royers de la Valfenière.

The building, marked by Romanesque styles (south and central naves), Gothic (northern nave, vaults) and Baroque (Saint Anne Chapel), preserves remarkable elements: a 12th century Romanesque bell tower, a 14th century stained glass window offered by Urban V, and crypts with sarcophagi and reliquary. The cathedral, the seat of an ancient diocese abolished in 1801, remains a symbol of Provencal religious heritage, mixing local history, legends (like that of the relics reported by Lazarus and Marie Madeleine) and medieval architecture.

Archaeological excavations revealed traces of the first Christian community of Apta Julia (III century), including a necropolis and a Baptistery dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The present cathedral, the fruit of six reconstructions between the 5th and 17th centuries, illustrates the liturgical and political evolutions of the region, from barbaric invasions to the Counter-Reform. Its organ (1705) and its treasure (sail of Saint Anne, reliquaries) make it a place of memory and devotion always active.

Ranked a historic monument in 1846, the Cathedral of Sainte-Anne d'Apt owes its fame to its role in spreading the cult of Saint Anne, whose relics, partially dispersed (British, Quebec), attracted pilgrims since the Middle Ages. The chapel of Saint Anne, built after the visit of Anne of Austria in 1660, and the stalls of the eighteenth century bear witness to its past prestige. Today, it remains a jewel of the Valencian heritage, open to visit and celebrations.
