Origin and history

Lyde Castle, located in Baurech, New Aquitaine, was built around 1632 in a characteristic style of the 2nd quarter of the 17th century. The building consists of a central house body flanked by three square pavilions, the centre of which is equipped with a round tower on the south side. The north facade, preceded by a porch, opens onto a courtyard framed by outbuildings. These architectural elements reflect the influence of the aristocratic homes of the time, combining symmetry and functionality.

In 1709, the chapel of the castle was erected, miraculously escaping the fire of 1795, which destroyed part of the buildings. Its interior retains a remarkable decoration: panelling imitating marble, fluted ionic pilasters, and paintings by Larraidy. These artistic elements, combined with the preserved structure, bear witness to the splendour of the seigneurial residences of the region. After the disaster, major restorations were undertaken in the 19th century, including the displacement of a well dated 1622 to another place in Baurech.

The castle and its chapel enjoy protections under the title of Historic Monuments: facades and roofs are inscribed in 1987, while the painted decoration of the chapel is classified in 1989. These measures highlight the heritage value of the site, combining 17th and 18th century architectural heritage and later restorations. The ensemble illustrates the evolution of tastes and techniques, as well as the preservation efforts of the 19th and 20th centuries.
