Origin and history

Montalba Castle, located in the heart of the village of Montalba-le-Château in the Pyrénées-Orientales, was built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It is a typical example of a feudal castle not transformed into a royal fortress, preserving original military features such as a polygonal enclosure without a flanking structure. Its central basin still houses a large tower dungeon and two round towers, while the outer enclosure, consisting of seventeen straight sections, is pierced by more than fifty archeries spread over two levels.

Access to the slopes is through a carrossable ramp and a north-west breach, while to the east, a road leads to a fortified gate flanked by a square belfry. The modern chapel, installed in the former seigneurial buildings in the southeast, coexists with the remains of a partially preserved circular tower. The archères, mostly short and dated from the 12th century, bear witness to the defensive evolution of the site, some of the 13th century with longer slots. The ensemble, classified as Historic Monument since 1984, offers a rare glimpse of medieval military art before the later transformations at Saint-Louis.

The site retains traces of more recent residential constructions, coupled with no apparent link to older military structures. The square tower, whose crenelated coronation seems prior to the 12th century, contrasts with adjacent seigneurial buildings. The round towers, equipped with narrow archeries, and the Romanesque cantern of the north front reinforce the historical interest of the castle, mentioned since 1020. Its registration as a Historic Monument in 1984 preserved these unique remains, accessible via the rue des Remparts in Montalba-le-Château.
