Origin and history

The Saint-Mathieu Chapel, located in the eponymous hamlet in the commune of Guidel (Morbihan), is a 15th century Gothic-style religious building. His Latin cross plan, with a flat bedside, is characteristic of the Breton sacred architecture of that time. An inscription dated 1487, engraved above the western door of the south transept, attests to its construction initiated on 20 May 1487 by Mahe Audren, probably under the patronage of the families Chefdubois (teachers of Trovern and Kerdodo at Guidel) and Rosmadec (teachers of Penhoat at Ploemeur), whose coat of arms adorn the consoles surrounding the vitre. This monument, partially classified as a Historical Monument since 1934, symbolizes the influence of local elites in the foundation of rural places of worship.

Over the centuries, the chapel has undergone several major changes. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the nave was rebuilt with elements reused from the original gate, and a Renaissance door was added to the south wall. In 1668 a sacristy was erected (marked by the inscription "L: THE POGHAM F[ecit?] 1668"), while in 1849 two windows pierced the south wall and a new bell tower replaced the old, originally located at the cross of the transept. The curved brick vault, installed in 1888 by Bernard-Ratton (disciple of Abbé Brisacien), replaces a wooden panel. These changes reflect the evolution of liturgical and aesthetic needs, while preserving traces of earlier phases, such as the four inner columns supporting the old bell tower.

The interior furnishings and decorations bear witness to the artistic richness of the chapel. Among the remarkable pieces are a 15th-century Saint Anne Trinitarian (classified in 1958), an 18th-century Christ on the Cross, and 19th-century stained glass windows signed "J. Fournier Tours 1888-1889" (registered in 1928). The master window represents St Matthew inspired by angels, while other stained glass windows illustrate local saints such as St Eloi or St Cornely. The 18th century high altar, the secondary altars, and a contemporary statue of Saint Mathieu (1991, by André Jouannic) complete this ensemble. Outside, a 17th-century fountain (dated 1660), a square, and statues-acroteries (animals, characters) highlight the sacred character of the site.

The chapel is at the heart of perennial traditions, including annual forgiveness, celebrated on the third Sunday in September and revived by the association "Les Amis de la Chapelle Saint-Mathieu" (created in 1985). This gathering, described by Étienne Guyomar (born 1904) as a major event of the early 20th century, mixed masses in Breton, community meals, Breton struggles, and local fair (carcutery stalls, mirlitons, medals). The Guyomar, hereditary treasurers of the chapel until 1917, organized these festivities, reflecting the social and religious life of a prosperous rural hamlet, marked by agriculture (vergers, meadows) and an intense popular faith. Today, the chapel also hosts summer concerts as part of the "7 Chapels in Arts" festival.

The building and its surroundings (fontaine, enclosure, granite cross) illustrate Breton sacred art, between seigneurial patronage, popular devotion, and architectural adaptations. The original sponsors, the Chefdubois and Rosmadec, belonged to the local nobility, while the later arrangements (XVIIth–XIXth centuries) revealed the involvement of parishioners and artisans, such as Le Pogham (sacristy, 1688) or Bernard-Ratton (restoration, 1888). The chapel, owned by the commune, remains a place of memory and celebration, anchored in the cultural landscape of southern Brittany.
