Origin and history

The Saint-Michel chapel, dependent on the Château de Coquille, was built during the 2nd quarter of the 18th century. Blessed in 1743, it adopted a simple rectangular plan, with a masonry of coated rubble and a two-paned slate roof. Its interior, unique in volume, retains a terracotta top floor and an original ceiling, testifying to its architectural authenticity.

The building is dedicated to the archangel Saint-Michel, represented in a central cartridge above the altar. The heavenly warrior is figurated as a breastplate, terrorizing Satan under his feet, surrounded by flames. This symbolic decoration reinforces the sacred and protective character of the chapel, typical of the religious buildings deprived of the period.

Classified as a Historic Monument, the chapel was fully registered by order of 7 May 2012. Its official address, 81 avenue de Verdun in Saint-Jean-de-Braye (Loiret), corresponds to a location deemed satisfactory a priori (level 6/10). The monument illustrates the 18th century secondary religious architecture, linked to the seigneurial or aristocratic domains of the Centre-Val de Loire region.
