Origin and history

The Chapel of Saint Peter, also known as the Chapel of the Black Penitents, is a Catholic religious building located in Lucéram, Alpes-Maritimes. Founded in the 16th century, it belonged to the Brotherhood of Black Penitents, created in 1558. Its current architecture dates mainly from 1780, when the chapel, which had become too small, was rebuilt according to the plans of the Gioffredo surveyor. The building thus combines 16th century elements and a late Baroque structure, with an elliptical nave and a circular dome.

The interior decoration of the chapel was painted in 1847, as evidenced by the date inscribed above the choir. A painted sign depicting Saints Paul and Peter, classified in 1918, was transferred to the parish church of Sainte-Marguerite. The chapel was used by the Black Penitents until the early 20th century, before being transferred to the factory around 1860. It has been listed as historic monuments since 12 December 2005.

The building is distinguished by its curved façade, which is pierced by a clover opening and surmounted by a triangular pediment. Its bell tower, decorated with an imperial dome and varnished tiles, adds to its unique architectural character. Inside, the elliptical nave, crowned with a dome, leads to a semicircular choir vaulted in cul-de-four. The painted decoration, restored in 1901, reflects the artistic and religious importance of this place in local history.
