Origin and history
The Saint-Fortuné Abbey of Charlieu, founded in 872 by Count Boson (future king of Burgundy) and Bishop Ratbert of Valencia, settles on a renowned site Carus Locus (holy place). Initially autonomous, she joined the Order of Cluny around 930-940. From the 10th century, the abbey houses relics of St Stephen and St Fortuné, attracting pilgrims. The 9th century church, in ruins, was rebuilt in the 11th century, while the abbey became a priory in 1040. In the Revolution, secularized and sold as a national good, only part of the narthex remains.
The Romanesque tympanos of the church, dated the 11th and 12th centuries, are sculptural masterpieces. The western façade (circa 1100) represents a mandorled Christ carried by angels, symbolizing parousia. The northern portals, linked by their biblical theme, illustrate scenes such as the wedding of Cana or Jewish sacrifices, reflecting the influence of Peter the Venerable, abbot of Cluny. The great tympanum combines apocalyptic visions (Isaiah, Ezekiel, Saint John) and Eucharistic symbols, in a style combining strength and delicacy.
The prior's home, built between the 15th and 16th centuries under the priorities of Antoine Geoffroy (1487-1498) and Jean de la Magdelaine (1509-1527), replaces older buildings, including a possible infirmary. After the Revolution, it housed a seminary and then a Marist school before becoming communal property. The Tower of the Gendarmerie, built at the end of the 15th century to strengthen fortifications, served as chaplaincy until 1790, and was occupied by the gendarmerie in the 19th century. Classified as a Historical Monument on several occasions (1846 to 2004), the abbey retains remarkable frescoes, substructions and architectural elements.
