Origin and history

The castle of Berzy-le-Sec is an ancient castle built between the 14th and 15th centuries, and then rebuilt in the 16th century. Its ruins, located in the municipality of Bernoy-le-Château (delegated municipality of Berzy-le-Sec, Aisne), testify to a quadrangular enclosure flanked by turrets and a castle typical of medieval defensive architecture. Ranked a Historic Monument by decree of 13 July 1926, it preserves a vaulted 16th century chapel and remains of adjacent ditches.

Around 1445, Pierre de Louvain, the lord of the place, acquired the seigneury and undertook the reconstruction or reshuffle of the castle. Occupied until 1918, the monument suffered extensive damage during bombings during the First World War, reducing part of its structures to ruins. The access was achieved by a third-point door surmounted by a mâchicoulis, preceded by a protruding door tower, a defensive system characteristic of the era.

The site includes a 16th century oriental building still well preserved, adorned with rectangular windows and blind arches, as well as a salient chapel vaulted in dogive crosses. A backyard, now extinct, was once lying in front of the plateau. A sculpted medallion representing coat of arms, preserved in the museum of Soissons, also comes from the castle, illustrating its link to local seigneurial history.

The current remains include ditches, an inner courtyard and architectural elements such as grooves of an old drawbridge. The property now belongs to the municipality. The castle, built near a quarry, served as a mansion for the Viscounts of Berzy, reflecting their power and role in the region during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
