Origin and history
The castle of Sourniac, also named château de Sartiges, is located in the commune of Sourniac, in the department of Cantal, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in 1636, it replaces an old 11th century medieval castle, destroyed in the 14th century by the English troops of Robert Knolles. This monument, of composite style combining medieval and renaissant influences, is distinguished by its three round towers surrounding the main house. It was ransacked during the French Revolution between late June and early July 1789.
The castle belonged to the family of Sartiges, who undertook its renovation. A common wing, built in the 18th century, was destroyed by fire in 1885. It was replaced in 1890 by a neo-Roman chapel designed by architect René Moreau. The estate also includes a pond of about one hectare, located nearby. The castle has been partly listed as a historical monument since 1983 for its facades and roofs, including those of the chapel.
Although private property and not open to the public, the castle of Sourniac is a characteristic example of rustic manor houses built in the 17th century by recently anoblish families. Its architecture, inspired by the great medieval Cantalian castles, makes it a remarkable witness to the local heritage. The site has also been listed since 1943 for its landscape and historical interest.
