Origin and history
The Château d'Aigne, located in Iteuil in the department of Vienna (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is distinguished by its 17th century portal, a unique vestige classified as Historic Monument since 1975. This portal, originally installed on a poitevin building today destroyed (perhaps the ancient church of the Augustines), was moved in the nineteenth century to adorn the entrance of the present castle. Its baroque style and sculptures, attributed to the Girouard brothers — renowned artists from the region in the 17th century — bear witness to remarkable local know-how. Decorative elements, such as statues or trophies, were originally supposed to overcome entably, now gone.
The castle itself, built in the 19th century, contrasts with the long service of the gate. Although its history is less documented, its association with the latter illustrates a common practice of reusing prestigious architectural elements, typical of the reconstructions or renovations of the period. The location of the monument at Iteuil, near Poitiers, is part of a territory marked by a rich religious and aristocratic heritage, where 17th century buildings, often linked to monastic orders or nobility, have frequently undergone transformations in the following centuries.
The data available highlight the artistic value of the portal, classified as an object, while the rest of the castle does not enjoy this protection. The exact address (6 Impasse de la Fontaine) and its Insee code (86113) confirm its anchoring in the town of Iteuil, in the former region Poitou-Charentes. The absence of information about its openness to the public or its current uses (chambres d'hôtes, visitations) limits the knowledge of its contemporary vocation, but its status as a Historic Monument makes it a witness to the local heritage.
