Origin and history

The Château d'Aigueperse, located in Saint-Paul in New Aquitaine, is a monument whose present building dates back to the limit of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Although the site was cited as early as 1288, its current rectangular structure dates from this pivotal period. The central house body houses a straight staircase occupying the entire width of the building, while the south facade is marked by two square pavilions in return for square. A turret, located at the northeast corner, as well as a forebody added in 1832 on the north façade, complete this remarkable architecture.

The entrance door, on the southern facade, is framed with canned pilasters surmounted by an egg-eye, all of which is covered with a mulched cornice. The stair turret, integrated with the walls of the first and second levels of the house, stands out on the roof to rise on two additional floors. These elements, as well as the chimney of the Guards Hall, have been protected since a 1979 order, highlighting their heritage value.

The castle illustrates the architectural evolutions between Renaissance and classical times, with subsequent additions such as the predecessor body of 1832. Its inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1979 specifically concerns the entrance door, the front and roof of the turret, the central staircase, as well as the fireplace of the Salle des Gardes. These protections highlight ornamental and structural details typical of noble homes of this time.
