Origin and history

The Château d'Apchon, built in the 2nd quarter of the 16th century, is an emblematic building of Saint-André-d'Apchon, in the Loire department. This Renaissance style castle welcomed royal personalities, including Henry II and Catherine de Medici, who stayed there in 1548. Its architecture reflects the influence of the period, mixing elegance and robustness, typical of the aristocratic residences of the period.

In 1963, the castle was partially listed as historical monuments, protecting its facades, roofs and a gallery located below the courtyard. Private property, he changed his hands in 2021, bought by a Dutch couple, Rogier and Wendy, who have resided there since 2025. These new owners turned the place into a guest house, offering three rooms, including one named Henry II, available year round, as well as spaces for private events.

Since 2026, the castle has been more open to the public with cultural and tourist activities. Visitors can rent spaces such as the garden, halls, or even the entire castle, according to customizable formulas. A reception room can accommodate up to 35 people for meetings or 20 guests for meals. The site is managed in collaboration with the local tourism office, Roannais Tourisme, and remains accessible mainly from March to mid-November, with the exception of the Henry II room.

The castle of Apchon thus illustrates a successful heritage rehabilitation, combining historical preservation and tourist dynamism. Its inscription at the Mérimée base and its precise location (3 Impasse du Château) make it a place anchored in the cultural landscape of the Loire and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
