Origin and history

The castle of Aren, mentioned from the twelfth century, was the residence of the lords of Aren, the first known, Auger d'Aren, is quoted around 1100 with his wife Bialana. Their descendant, Béatrix d'Aren (born around 1165), married Géraud de Mauléon in 1189, thus consolidating the influence of this family in the region. An act of 1335 confirmed the existence of the castle, which was acquired around 1393 by an officer of Gaston Phoebus, Count of Foix and Viscount of Béarn.

In the 15th century, the south wing of the castle was built or deeply transformed between 1434 and 1441, during which time it was decorated with frescoes. The current aspect of the building dates mainly from the first half of the seventeenth century, with the construction or reconstruction of the west wing and outbuildings, as well as modifications to the south wing. The Barony of Aren, established in 1658, was vassal of the Viscounty of Béarn, illustrating its importance in the local feudal hierarchy.

The castle, which has been listed as a historical monument since 1984, retains remarkable elements such as facades, roofs and a room on the first floor classified for its mural. These features reflect the architectural and political developments of the region, from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The site remains a major testimony of the Belarusian seigneurial heritage, linked to the history of the noble families and the territorial transformations of the Béarn.

The town of Aren, where the castle stands, is part of the historic province of Béarn, marked by cultural unity and varied landscapes. The monument is part of a rural territory, crossed by rivers such as the river Oloron, and marked by a traditional economy based on agriculture and livestock. The castle, now privately owned, embodies both the past seigneurial power and the architectural heritage of this region of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
