Origin and history

The castle of Arlebosc is a castle built around the 14th century, located in the center of the village of Arlebosc, in Ardèche. Owned by the commune, it does not visit but remains visible from the adjacent streets. Its architecture takes on a "square" shape, with circular towers at the corners and a square dungeon of thirteen meters side, with thick walls of two meters. Inside, there are three distinct levels: a crib vaulted ground floor and a floor decorated with dogive crosses.

The castle was once a presbytery dependent on Notre-Dame-du-Puy, located on the lands of the seigneury of Arlebosc. Its location, close to the village church, highlights its anchoring in the local historical and religious fabric. Today, although closed to the public, it is a major visual landmark for residents and visitors, marking the medieval history of the region.

The structure reflects the defensive features of the ardèche castles, with a facade facing the church. Its past role, linked to seigneury and parish life, illustrates the importance of fortified buildings in the social and territorial organization of the Middle Ages in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
