Origin and history

The Château d'Auvilliers, located in the municipality of the same name in the Seine-Maritime, is an emblematic monument of Normandy. Its current architectural elements date mainly from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, although its exact origin remains partially documented. The castle was rebuilt in the early seventeenth century for Jacques de Monsures and Charlotte de Fautereau, two local figures linked to its history.

The castle has been included in the inventory of historical monuments since 13 April 1933, a recognition of its heritage value. However, he suffered significant architectural losses, including the disappearance of his hexagonal towers after the Second World War. These changes reflect the historical changes that have affected the region.

On the architectural level, the castle is distinguished by its brick and flint porch, as well as by a chapel integrated into its enclosure wall, also built of brick. These features illustrate the construction techniques and aesthetic choices of the modern period in Normandy. The entry gate, specifically, is protected by the 1933 registration order.

Today, the Château d'Auvilliers remains a testimony to the architectural transformations and social dynamics of the Seine-Maritime. Although some parts have disappeared, its inscription and partial preservation allow us to study the evolution of Norman castles between the 17th and 20th centuries.
