Origin and history

The castle of Avensac, located in the village of the same name in the department of Gers (region Occitanie), has its origins in the 14th century, a period of which today remains a tower and a fortified gate. These defensive elements, typical of the late Middle Ages, testify to its initial role probably linked to local protection or seigneurial control. The building was then integrated into a larger defensive system, of which a thick wall – still visible – was part, suggesting a strategic function in the region.

At the beginning of the 19th century, around 1810-1830, the castle was completely rebuilt in a neoclassical style, almost completely erasing the traces of the old fortress. The new structure consists of a main one-storey facade, flanked by two symmetrical wings delimiting a courtyard. The latter is closed by a wrought iron gate, while the outbuildings include an orange shop, a garage, and old stables adjacent to the medieval dungeon, reused as an entry poter. In the east, an annex building, perhaps the site of the old castral chapel, preserves the remains of the original defensive walls, rebuilt during this reconstruction.

The castle has been listed in the Historical Monuments since 24 June 1983, a protection specifically covering facades, roofs, dungeons, terraces with their retaining walls, and the remaining defensive elements. These measures aim to preserve both the medieval heritage and the 19th century transformations, illustrating the architectural and functional evolution of the site. Today, the castle remains a hybrid testimony, mixing military heritage and aristocratic residence, characteristic of the remodelling of French castles in modern times.

Located in the east of the village of Avensac, the castle overlooks a landscape of hills, with its terraces on a gentle slope. Its exact address, 5010 Le Village, 32120 Avensac, places it in the heart of a territory marked by the rural and seigneurial history of Gers. Although the sources do not specify its current use (visits, rental, accommodation), its status as a Historic Monument makes it a notable heritage site of the Occitanie region, linked to local history and medieval defensive architecture.
