Origin and history

Havernas Castle is a mansion built in the 17th century, whose architecture is inspired by the classic French mansions of that time. This stone building, located in Havernas in the Somme, was profoundly transformed in the second half of the 19th century. Architects Victor and Paul Delefortrie led the expansion and overhaul work, while preserving the original style of the house. The interior decor, including the panelling, fireplaces and cornices, was enriched by the sculptor Hesse, giving the castle a remarkable elegance.

The dining room on the ground floor, with its support panel, doors and fireplace, illustrates the care given to the interior layout. The castle, surrounded by a park and outbuildings (burning, commons, dovecote, greenhouse, etc.), also includes a funeral chapel. The whole, including facades, roofs, and decorative elements, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 12 June 2014. Its official address, 8 Place de l'Église in Havernas, makes it a heritage landmark of Hauts-de-France.

The architects Delefortrie, father and son, as well as the sculptor Hesse, marked the history of the castle with their artistic and technical contribution. Their work reflects 19th-century architectural trends, combining classical heritage and decorative innovations. The castle, although partially accessible, remains a testimony of the evolution of seigneurial houses in Picardia, between residential function and social prestige.
