Origin and history

The castle of Orvès, located in Valette-du-Var in the Var, is a bastide built in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This historic monument is distinguished by its typical architecture of this period, with emblematic facades and roofs, as well as a chapel and adjoining commons. The estate extends over a vast plot of land including terraces, retanch walls, and a hydraulic system, reflecting the importance of the agricultural and landscape developments of the time.

The building of the castle is attributed to Vincent Martiny d'Orvès, the first consul of Toulon, and his son. Several key dates mark its construction, notably 1683, 1694, 1700, and 1711, with a specific mention of the year 1695 engraved on a beam of the frame. These elements highlight the gradual evolution of the bastide, integrating modifications and extensions over the decades.

The Château d'Orvès was partially protected in 1993, with an inscription covering the facades, roofs, and terraced garden. In 2024, a broader listing was granted, encompassing the entire estate, including its outbuildings, agricultural plots, and gypsum farms. This classification reflects the heritage value of the site, both for its architecture and for its integration into a preserved historical and agricultural landscape.
