Origin and history

Osthouse Castle, located in Osthouse, Lower Rhine, is a historical monument dating back to the 14th century. The remains of this first construction include moat, the base of the enclosure wall and polygonal towers. This first building was followed by major extensions and renovations, including the west wing built around 1436 for Claus Zorn de Bulach, and then renovated in 1558, as evidenced by the task marks and dates. This work marks a period of significant transformation for the castle, which adapts to the needs and taste of the era.

The south wing of the castle was erected in 1552 or 1570, consolidating its structure and architectural importance. The chapel, on the other hand, was renovated in the 18th century, illustrating a stylistic and functional evolution. The castle has always been inhabited by the Zorn family of Bulach, from its origins until today, making it a living testimony of local history. The grave monuments used in the entrance also recall the deep connection between this family and the castle.

Ranked as historical monuments since 15 March 1983, Osthouse Castle protects remarkable elements such as the facades and roofs of both wings with their towers, the entrance bastion, the courtyard with its well, as well as the enclosure wall and moat. These protections underline the heritage importance of the site, both for its architecture and its history, intimately linked to that of the Zorn family of Bulach and the Alsatian region.
