Origin and history
The château of Bachen, located in the commune of Duhort-Bachen (département des Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine), is a typical example of a noble house of Chalosse, entirely rebuilt in the second half of the eighteenth century. It occupies a plateau overlooking the Adour River, on the site of an ancient castral site, reflecting a long earlier aristocratic occupation. Former seat of a barony, it was at the heart of a vast estate, today dedicated to viticulture under the name Tursan (AOC).
Its architecture combines a high-roofed house — reminiscent of the Bearnais houses — and a low wing of communes, complemented by a cellar and agricultural outbuildings in the Landes. The ensemble, registered with historical monuments since 5 July 1994, illustrates the adaptation of the local elites to the economic activities of the period, including the vineyard. The cellar was renovated in 1991 by architect Jean de Gastines, emphasizing a desire for modernization while preserving the heritage.
Protected elements include the facades and roofs of the house, as well as the Saint-Ouen fountain, reflecting the symbolic and functional importance of the site. Private property, the castle remains a major architectural and historical testimony of the Landes Chalosse.
