Origin and history

The castle of Bartherans is a building located in the municipality of the same name, in the west of the Doubs department, in the region Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built between the second half of the seventeenth century and the middle of the eighteenth century, it illustrates the aristocratic residential architecture of this period, with characteristic elements such as a wrought iron staircase and richly decorated rooms.

Several elements of the castle are protected as historical monuments. Since 17 June 1992, the 18th century staircase with its wrought iron ramp, a large upstairs bedroom with its decor, a bedroom with alcove and a fireplace, as well as a decorated crossing room, are inscribed. The facades, roofs of the house, the well and the paving of the courtyard were classified on 5 July 1993. These protections highlight the heritage value of the site, both for its exterior architecture and its interior design.

The castle features a thin lava roof, typical of the region, as well as chaule communes and a paved courtyard. These architectural details, combined with its location in the Jura massif, make it a representative example of the seigneurial residences of Franche-Comté. Although the sources do not mention any historical figures related to its construction or occupation, its registration and ranking reflect its importance in the local heritage.

Today, the castle of Bartherans remains a testimony of the lifestyles and construction techniques of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in this region. Its state of conservation and the protections it enjoys make it possible to study the evolution of noble residences in Franche-Comté, between local tradition and wider architectural influences.
